Blood Test For Cholesterol - What Is It? And Should I Have One?

A blood test for cholesterol is important to your heart health. Cholesterol can be found in your cell membranes as a lipidic waxy form and is passed through plasma in the blood. Cholesterol is highly important for the cells and this is produced in the body. There is a proven link between the level of cholesterol in the blood and with the odds of suffering a heart attack. Elevated cholesterol levels in the blood is one of the number one reasons which heart disease occurs. Any condition which elevates your odds of contracting a disease is called a risk factor. The higher the risk is, the higher the chances are of getting a disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in America. Every year about one million Americans suffer a heart attack and half of those die.

This means that it is imperative that you watch your cholesterol levels. The sides of arteries are the locations that contain accumulations of masses resulting from surplus cholesterol in blood. Blood flow to the heart can be slowed down or blocked by build up in arteries causing them to harden and narrow. Oxygen is carried to your heart through blood. Cardiac arrest is caused by a mass causing total stoppage of the flow of blood to a part of the heart.

The Blood Test For Cholesterol

Physicians, when performing routine exams, often request that a patient have a blood test for cholesterol to shed some light on whether they are at risk for developing heart disease. To measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides present in the blood testing is done on the serum (the non-cellular fluid part) of blood.

A total holesterol blood test measures blood fats, overall cholesterol, ldl (bad cholesterol), hdl (good cholesterol), triglicerides and several other fats. LDL or bad cholesterol is the part of cholesterol mearured in all blood cholesterol checkup.

The blood test for cholesterol is a rather easy and quick procedure. Prior to 9-12 hours of the test, you should not take food, coffee or tea, but only water, or else it may change the result. Blood is typically drawn from a vein, usually from the inside of the elbow or at the back of the hand.

The measurement unit of milligrams per decilitre of blood (mg/dl) is used for all blood fats testing. If the amount of total cholesterol is not more than 200mg/dl then it can be accepted. The latest medical dictum says that the higher the count in cholesterol will have greater the risk of having a heart disease or atherosclerosis (fat-clogged arteries). People that have elevated levels of cholesterol, such as over 240 mg/dL have almost two times the chance of having heart disease versus others that do not have elevated levels.

Whether the test and the results are valid is a very important issue to consider. One study showed that 70 per cent of the samples that were analysed revealed that there is proof that bias existed when computing the results.

Cholesterol can be increased in the blood from a variety of factors. Blood cholesterol levels are influence by many things, including the amount of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol a person consumes. Although cholesterol from what you eat is important, the most influential source of it is from saturated fat. One major risk for heart disease is obesity. The cholesterol levels in your body are raised because of it.

Lastly and most unfortunately, genes can also play an important role in your cholesterol levels. Families can often see a history of high blood cholesterol.

A regular blood test for cholesterol can help to maintain the heart disease risk at minimum level. Taking regular physical exercise is a great way to burn extra calories. Bad cholesterol will be lowered by doing exercises daily which leads to raise good cholesterol. Shedding pounds would also be helpful.The alternate route is to be smart with dietary restrictions, keeping a watch on what you consume, to protect you from the disorder.

How accurate is a pregnancy blood test 7 to 8 days after conception?

My friend had a blood pregnancy test done 7 to 8 days after possible conception and the result came back negative. She is still having pregnancy symptoms. She asked the lady who gave her the results and the lady said that the test should not be done until atleast 10 days after conception to be most accurate. How accurate is a pregnancy blood test 7 to 8 days after conception? Thanks in advance!

I was told that a blood test can be done 9 days after conception and a urine test not until after the first missed period. I would definetly do a retest.

Summertime and Fall Time Safety at the Beach or Backyard Pool - Stay Out of Hot Water

Summertime is a wonderful time for friends and family. Whether in the back yard around the swimming pool for a barbecue or at the lake cottage or seashore chalet safety is always a watchword during the summer time - especially involving any water and electricity. Water, moisture and electrical power just do not mix and indeed are a recipe for disaster.

What can you do to prevent electrical problems around water and increase the safety of your family when it comes to summer time electrical injuries and accidents?

First of all always keep safety in mind. Electrical power is both a wonderful servant but yet a terrible master. In a swoop mix electrical power from an ordinary ac electrical plug and water - and it a recipe for potential tragedy and heartache. The worst part if that by following simple rules of safety all of these tragedies are usually easily prevented.

First of all remember all it takes for an electrocution accident to occur is not much. It's not only the swimming pool water that can be of danger but simply any electrical conductive pool of moisture. This can mean wet skins, or wet surfaces should cry out danger signs and signals or concern. It can be a pool of water on a section of patio stone deck, it can be wet grass that is being mowed by an electric power mower or it can be the obvious such as a wet surface on a swimming pool deck. The results can all be tragic and yet easily preventable.

What are the basic rules of summertime electrical safety when it comes to being around moisture or water? Obviously- first of all never touché electrical cords, switches or appliances when you are standing in water or have wet hands. Next, just as obvious, if you are using elect5rical extension cords or electrical appliances and any of the extension cords or appliances no matter how small and of low wattage usage fall into the water never try to retrieve them out of water until you have turned off the power at the main switch box. It can be as small an item as electrical rotisserie motor. It does not matter - turn off the power at the main switch box no matter what. It is not worth the risk and small saving of time not to be thorough and not play it safe just for a second's convenience.

If you are using electrical devices, even those specifically meant to be used around water and moisture - such as wet/dry vacs or steam carpet cleaners always read and follow the manufacture's instructions. The same goes for pressure washers that you might use on a cottage or chalet wooden deck. If not sure, most manufactures now have toll free numbers for tech support. Call ahead of your trip - before your vacation or weekend trip when the electrical appliance manufacture tech support line is open and you have ready access to a phone at home or during the working hours while in the city.

Lastly if you do chose use electrical devices outdoors - then the best and wisest choice always is to source and find specifically designed waterproof electrical devices that are specifically designed to be used outdoors. Remember that in most cases the same device , once installed will not be used in the summer but will also have to overwinter a harsh winter climate - perhaps even as harsh as a cold Canadian winter.

The electrical device will have to overwinter in that cold climate where seals or plastic insulation may deteriorate or crack. It's always a worst case scenario when you are playing with electrical power and safety. Its false economy to do any other way. Play it safe to the limit.

In the end it can be said that you can never be too safe when it comes to electrical safety during the summer safe. Play it safe and you can stay out of hot water this summer or coming fall autumn time.

pre conceive plus question Safety seal?

Hello all today o got a bottle of this safe for TTC lubricant from CVS and I noticed there is no safety seal. The box didn't look tampered with at all and sticker looked untouched and it does say if safety seal under the lid is missing do not use. I was wondering if that has happened to you? I feel kind of strange exchanging this kind of product. I would just toss it and buy another but its $18.99 a bottle. I'm just wondering if all the bottles are like that and they mean the sticker on the outside is the safety seal.

you should really exchange it and get a new one.

Commonly Used Baby Skin Care Products Contain Chemicals That Put Infants at Substantial Risk

Infant Skin

The arrival of a new baby brings many concerns and issues for new and incumbent parents. While new parents are faced with a myriad of issues for the first time, incumbent parents have to deal with the information explosion and change in thought on issues which have evolved since their first parenting experience. In addition, when parents have a second child, if the sex is different some of the issues are also new. Chief among the issues for both new and incumbent parents is the proper care of newborn skin. In fact, in many surveys of parents of newborns this issue often ranks first on the list of concerns. For example, in one study published in the journal Bedside Nursing, a group of mothers with infants under the age of 15 months was asked to consider the chief problem they faced in their babies’ first year. The study reports that the most common concern was how to care for their babies’ skin . Not only are new parents unaware of how to treat their newborn’s skin, but most pediatricians are also unaware of optimal infant skin care. Pediatricians are given very little exposure to pediatric dermatology in medical school and residency training. The minimal experience they do have is usually with severely diseased skin, rather than the care of healthy, but vulnerable skin, as is the case with newborns. This topic is also not addressed in most textbooks of pediatric medicine, St. Louis, MO: C.V. Mosby Co., 1983. The lack of clinically available information leads to the continued use of harmful chemicals on infants. Shockingly, while trying to treat the newborn cautiously and safely, the average newborn is exposed to as many as 48 different chemicals without consideration of the potential toxicity of the chemicals or the products that contain them.

A full-term newborn’s skin is only 40% to 60% the thickness of adult skin, thus rendering it considerably more vulnerable and more permeable. The ratio of body surface area to weight is up to five times that of an adult. Thus, the combination of thinner skin and high body surface area ratios render the infant at significant risk with any integrity disruption of the skin. The skin of premature infants is of even greater risk as it has a significantly less developed stratum corneum when compared to term babies. Accordingly they are at even greater risk of thermal instability due to transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Hence, the skin is a critical protectant of the infant for water and thermal control. When improperly cared for, an infant’s skin can be a serious potential health hazard.

Hazardous Ingredients in Baby Skin Care Products

Many commonly used baby skin care products contain potentially very harmful ingredients. Baby skin care products containing dyes (artificial color) should be avoided as many of these artificial colors are known sensitizers and may result in dermatitis and allergic reactions. As this may become a health concern, dyes in products should be avoided. Fortunately, they are not life threatening. However, many of these products contain additional chemicals that may be life-threatening and must be unequivocally avoided. Three commonly used baby skin care chemicals that must be avoided are talc, propylene glycol and glycerin.

Talc

One of the most dangerous ingredients in baby skin care products is talc. It is a common ingredient of the most popular baby powders in use. In a survey conducted by Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Il, 47% of the respondents used baby powder (talc). Another study of baby powder usage found that 69% of parents routinely applied baby powder to their newborns’ skin. In this study parents used the baby powder because they believed that the powder killed bacteria and yeast and prevented diaper rash, neither of which is a valid action of baby powder. Fewer than 500 of the respondents were aware that aspiration or ingestion of powder (talc) was a health hazard.

Baby powder use has been associated with morbidity and mortality due to inhalation. In a review of talc related infant deaths, it was found that of the 25 cases reviewed, fatality occurred in 20% of these reported cases. Based upon the potential hazard of talc use, baby powders containing talc should be discouraged for infants.

Propylene Glycol and Glycerin

Propylene glycol has been studied for its toxic effects that include seizures, sudden collapse, cardiac arrhythmia and asystole, hepatic damage, renal damage and hyperosmolality. In a survey conducted on neonatal skin care practices, the authors warned against the use of propylene glycol and glycerin on infants. They cited the associated risks of hyperosmolality and seizures. Propylene glycol is the second ingredient listed on the world’s leading baby lotion ingredient disclosure. While baby products containing propylene glycol and glycerin may bear names of “trusted” companies, further review of the wisdom of their use is warranted. Remedy products contain less than 0.30% propylene glycol.

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is a hydrocarbon that is processed from crude oil. Many people confuse the name as having the connotation of containing vitamins and minerals, rather than its actual meaning which is derived from the earth’s crude oil. Mineral oil is a separation component along with kerosine and gasoline. While the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA), the leading industry lobbying group, has pointed out that mineral oil should not get the same treatment as other hydrocarbons such as kerosene and gasoline, the Commission continues to pursue the closure regulations. While mineral oil has not been studied to the same degree in the same pediatric literature as talc, propylene glycol or glycerin, it is clear that the Commission’s findings will trigger interest in warning against its use on infant skin. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is preparing a ruling that would mandate child-resistant closures on baby oil that contains more that 10% mineral oil. Beyond the available data, with the risk of other hydrocarbons well known in the causation of various cancers, it seems extremely unwise to apply a hydrocarbon to the delicate skin of a baby. This is especially true when no nutritive value of mineral oil to the baby or the skin can be identified, and there are many other, better options for skin ingredients.

Conclusions

While trying to do the best thing for baby, use of many commonly available baby skin care products is actually or potentially harmful to babies. Increasingly, parents are realizing the importance of early exposure of babies to damaging compounds in their first months of life. The marketplace is not only ready, but in many ways, through their purchasing choices for themselves, demanding natural alternatives with better health implications for their baby’s skin. When changing the litterbox of a cat that has toxoplasmosis, will an ordinary medline mask protect you?

What type of mask should be worn when changing the litter of a cat that has contracted toxoplasmosis? Will the ordinary MedLine Face Masks offer full protection, or is something stronger needed, like a carbon filter mask?

IF the cat does have it, he can only spread it for two weeks, after that he's not contagious anymore.

The toxo is in the poop. Not touching the poop is all it takes, but really just washing your hands well with soap and water will eliminate the problem. Masks are useless since it's not something you're going to be breathing in. Toxo has to be transmitted hand to mouth. So washing hands will fix it.

You can also use gloves as well.

But are you really at risk? A lot of people are immune because they were exposed to toxo prior to this--most humans catch it from handling raw meat. If you're immune it'll show up in a simple blood test your doctor can give you.

London is a wonderful place for tourists, especially as its got so many museums & art galleries. these include the Natural History Museum, which was established in 1881. This wonderful museum has sometimes fabulous exhibits, which include the famous replica diplodocus skeleton, often known as dippy, which is displayed in the museum's central hall. Another wonderful exhibit is a blue whale skeleton, which weighs a massive 10 tons & is exhibited in the large mammals hall.

One of the city's most well known shops is harrods in knightsbridge. This department store is one of the most famous in britain & was founded in 1834. now run by Mohamed Al Fayed, it employs over five thousand people & has many designer concessions.
