Inserting Arch Supports and Shoe Insoles to Relieve Pain

Foot pain is a problem for many and can also lead to tenderness in the ankles, calves, legs and back. Sometimes foot pain interferes with our lives, making it difficult to engage in every day activities like walking and running. Many have turned to orthotic devices, such as shoe insoles and arch supports to help deal with the pain. These devices are very helpful because they balance body weight to reduce pressure on the feet. Investing in a good pair of sneakers is a start, but shoe insoles, arch supports and orthotics offer support that your shoes may be lacking in. Inserting orthotics in your shoes can help with the following:

1 Plantar faciitis
2  Shin splints
3 Ankle, heel and arch pain
4 Foot alignment
5 Calluses, corns and bunions
6 Back and knee pain
7  Overpronation

You should see a foot doctor before spending money on any foot products. This will save you time and money because your podiatrist will be able to recommend orthotics, shoe insoles and arch supports specific for your situation.

What are shoe insoles, orthotics and arch supports, exactly?

Orthotic shoe insoles and arch supports are good for extra cushioning and absorbing shock. Usually gel or foam cushioning is used. Some orthotic insoles and arch supports will mold themselves to your feet to provide extra support. For more beneficial relief, consider custom orthotic shoe insoles and arch supports. Custom orthotics will cost you anywhere from $150-$300, but they are created specifically for your feet and work to correct foot problems and relieve foot pain. Over-the-counter foot products are readily available and relatively inexpensive in comparison, but will not deliver the same results.

Is Dr. Scholls insoles allowed on planes?

The TSA website says that gel insoles are prohibited. I wouldn't wear it the day of the flight (just pack it in your checked luggage and wear it while on your trip). Even if the particular kind you have isn't prohibited, do you really want to argue with a TSA agent about it and risk missing your flight (or worse)? This is the same agency that took a little kid's play-doh although it was not explicitly prohibited because TSA screeners get to use their own "discretion."

Dealing With Bunions En Pointe

Many girls who start on pointe are scared that they will get bunions from doing pointe work. Pointe work will not 'cause' bunions, however if you do have a family predisposition to bunions (check out your Mother and Grandmothers feet!) then wearing ill fitting shoes (whether they are street shoes or pointe shoes) may hasten their development.

People usually say that they have a bunion if they start getting a lump out at the base of the big toe. You can get a 'pseudo' bunion by the rubbing of the pointe shoe if the wings are too short and do not come up to the level of the big toe joint, or wear a very narrow box. This causes the toes to be squashed together, and the ball of the foot sits above the box, rather than being supported within it. Often picking a shoe with longer wings and a wider box will help reduce pressure on the area, and the irritation will subside...

A ‘real’ bunion is when the end part of the big toe begins to angle in towards the other toes, and the knuckle of the toe (head of the first metatarsal) drifts away from the second metatarsal. The protruding piece of bone thickens and often gets red and irritated. Sometimes it may feel hot.

Several things are often present in the physical examination of a dancer with bunions.

1) Often she has quite mobile feet but tends to overturn the feet in first and fifth positions.

2) She may have good turnout range, but may not have the strength to use it in standing and when dancing.

3) If this is the case, when she is standing the rolling in of the feet puts pressure on the inner edge of the big toe and this encourages the drift towards the second toe.

4) If she has good turnout range she often walks with the feet slightly turned out, and rolls off the inner edge of the big toe, rather than pushing off from the underneath part of it.

5) The muscles that support her arch are usually too weak to support the foot, and especially the one under her big toe (Flexor Hallucis Brevis) is unable to assist the movement from demi to full pointe.

6) There is often an isolated restriction in mobility between the top end of the first metatarsal and the mid foot bones (Cuneiforms).

7) If there is reduced mobility of the big joint when attempting to go onto demi pointe, this often results in either sickling in, or sickling out en demi-pointe

The metatarsal of the big toe is often rotated in, and angled out away from the second metatarsal.

9) She may demonstrate poor pelvic stability, with the thigh, knee and foot rotating inwards with single knee bends in parallel.

Depending on how many of the above points are true for the dancer, she should commence a series of exercises based on turnout strength, arch control and control of the intrinsic muscles of the feet. The dancer with bunions often needs mobilization of the mid foot to help re align the toe correctly, and then taping and padding in the shoe to keep the toe in alignment. There are various taping techniques that can be used to help the dancer with bunions. Many people use toe separators, and this may help prevent the big toe from crossing the second toe, however it does not solve the real problem. It is preferable to tape under the head of the first metatarsal, before drawing the tape up and over the knuckle, de-rotating the first metatarsal. The tape is then wrapped around the big toe. This often helps align the toe more correctly in the shoe. A tape can also be used to keep the head of the first metatarsal in closer to the second, to reduce the sideways drift.

Any padding should be in a donut configuration so as to distribute the pressure to the area around the bunion, rather than to increase the pressure on the already tender area. Create custom designed shapes by cutting pieces out of a simple foam rubber shoe inner sole that you can buy from the supermarket. They are cheap, comfy, and you can even get deodorizing ones.

Cut a circle larger than the inflamed area, and then remove the center portion so that there is no increased pressure on the inflamed area. Adhere the padding onto the foot to keep it in place with thin hypoallergenic white tape so that it does not slide around when dancing.

Having a family history of developing bunions is not a barrier to commencing pointe work; however the dancer must take special care of her feet to avoid early development of this often painful condition.

Can metatarsal injury/spur cause back/knee pain? Any advice?

A few weeks ago, I began experiencing pain/burning along the bottoms of my feet. I got ordinary arch supports for my shoes and things improved. I saw my doctor last week and he said that I have spurs on the side of my feet (outer edge, near big toe) and had a metatarsal injury (not a fracture) that could likely be corrected with the use of metatarsal pads inserted in the shoe. I'm using the pads, but I've been having increased pain in my knees and back, and the pain in my feet is back.

Hypersonic airplanes don't have pointy noses?

Often when looking at a design for a hypersonic airplane, the nose is a wide, wedge shape rather than a point. If you look at pictures of the x-43 or others, you'll see what I mean.

Because of heat considerations.
When going at hypersonic speed, the heat gradient is inversely proportional to the radius of curvature. The pointier the object, the hotter it will get.
When flying at Mach 3.2, the SR-71 outside skin panels were heated to over 600 F from air friction (that is why they were titanium, aluminium alloys would have not tolerated the heat).
At supersonic speed, the actual shape of the body (being pointy as opposed to being bluff) is not as important, as the air does not have time to move out of the way anyway, as pressure waves propagate only at the speed of sound. Anything that is outside of the Mach shockwave cone is not influenced by the object generating the wave.
Of course, the high speed regime imposes design choices that are less than optimal for lower speeds, making things complicated as a fast plane has to travel at those intermediate speed on the way to the cruise velocity. So, you see, that is not that easy a problem to solve.

How To Select The Correct Insole

How to Know Which Insole is Right for You
Research has shown which types of insoles are good for the different types of foot arches. While many people will experiment to see which product works best, there are a few general rules when it comes to matching insoles with arch types.

For Flat Feet
These types of feet are more prone to over-pronation and require something with high support and motion control. The goal with a flat arch is to get something very rigid and supportive under the arch to get it more upright, helping to control the rate of over-pronation that leads to more serious conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis.
Orthotics and other highly supportive insoles are good for a flat arch - but beware that there is a break in period where the foot becomes accustomed to having a lot of support, and it might be sore for the first few days.

High Arches

The goal with a high arch is to provide as much cushioning as possible to help absorb the shock of an imbalanced transfer of force and pressure through the foot.

I was looking for an insole for running that will also do something for my pronation... I was looking at Spenco PolySorb Total Support Insoles and Sof Sole Graphite Orthotic Insoles.
which one of these two are better? or can anyone recommend a specific insole that worked for them and helped their pronation. I have over-pronation.

To Theme or not to Theme: a Guide to Five Different Home Bar Themes

Once you have decided to create a home bar, you have to think about the details.  Will you have track lighting?  Is there going to be a draft machine?  Will your bar stools swivel?  These all-important questions can be overwhelming.  Having a bar theme can help make the task of designing a lot easier.  Take a look at some of my favorite bar themes and some tips on how to make your themed bar truly authentic.

Irish Pub—One of the most popular bar themes is the Irish Pub.  Rich in history and Irish roots, a pub should have the look of a rustic, rugged drinking spot tucked into the corner of some quaint little Irish town.  The lighting is often dim and the main theme of décor is dark, shiny woods.  A heavy polished bar with brass railings should be the central item in your Irish bar and some rustic, worn in swivel top bar stools made from heavy quality wood should invite guests in for a pint.  Complete you Irish Pub with some great native brews on tap and maybe a space reserved for pool or darts.  The Irish Pub look is an easy one to achieve and a fun one to enjoy.

Tiki Lounge—Often the sought-after look for an outdoor bar, the Tiki Lounge bar is also a popular choice for home bars.  To achieve the Tiki look, a grass skirt bar is a must-have as are bamboo bar stools and a thatched roof hut.  Adding small touches like stringed lights, paper lanterns and drink umbrellas make your Tiki bar all the more authentic.  Invite guests to your Tiki Lounge either poolside or in a basement area and be sure to remember the colorful island tunes.  With a slushy ice machine and the mixed drinks flowing, you will be in paradise in no time.

Retro Swing Spot—Offer guests a throw back entertainment spot with a retro styled bar.  A high gloss bar surface with funky retro lines and shiny red stripes will remind guests of days gone by.  Complete the bar’s look with amazing vinyl seated swivel bar stools in chrome finish and you’ve got a look right out of Grease!  Accent your retro lounge with some vintage Coca Cola posters, a funky juke box and a retro soda machine and you’ve got a truly groovy set up.  Stock your bar with sodas and floats and offer martinis in retro styles glasses for the finishing touches to your new retro hang out.

Sports Bar—For the manly man, a sports bar in the home can be a dream come true.  To outfit your sports bar in high fashion, a bar top in the colors of your favorite team would match perfectly with your framed memorabilia hanging on the walls.  Provide armed bar stools and perhaps a secondary seating area with cushy chairs to watch the game in.  Don’t forget the beautiful flat-screen TV mounted in the corner to provide the entertainment.  Decorate with a neon sign or your favorite player’s jersey and give your bar an authentic team feel.  Finally, make sure the drinks are flowing from your mini keg refrigerator and be sure to have plenty of peanuts and pretzels available for when the guys come over for the game. 

Whatever the bar style you decide to go with, one thing is true: your bar should be a reflection of you and your family and friends.  Keep special favorites on hand to show your guests that you truly care about their entertainment.  Most of all enjoy setting up your home bar and giving it the special touches that will truly make it your own.

I know that Rock Band has 4 different things you can hit on the drum set, plus a foot petal thing, but that guitar hero has 5 different things you can hit on the drums, and a foot petal also. But I'm wondering is there anything else?

Causes of your heel pain could include inadequate flexibility in your calf muscles, lack of arch support, being overweight, suddenly increasing physical activity, and spending too much time on your feet. Treatment can involve any of or all of the following remedies as in rest, ice application, stretching, taping the heel for support, and orthonics for you shoes.

Foot Heel Pain Treatment: According to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), 72% of people who used stretching exercises to lesson heel pain, had the pain subside. And the good news is, most foot heel pain treatment plans are easy and can be conducted at home. Surgery is hardly ever necessary unless you let it get out of hand.

Heel pain is by far the most common foot complaint that affects millions of people around the world. Plantar Fasciitis is the ailment that is often associated with the symptoms of Heel Pain and Heel Spurs.

Plantar Fascia is that flat band of fibrous ligaments located under the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes. This dense strip of tissues acts like a bow string that spans the arch of the foot to give it support.

How does Plantar Fasciitis Develop?

The Plantar Fascia generally takes the full load of the body when the foot is placed on the ground. This transmits great force and stretches the Plantar Fascia to even out and flatten the arch of the foot to distribute the weight of the body. The bow and string analogy appropriately describes the arching of the foot by the Plantar Fascia.

Normally the Plantar Fascia is very tough and flexible to withstand forces transmitted during walking or running. The normal function can be however affected by excessive abuse of the feet, over-pronation, old age or being over-weight. As a result of the painful stretching the Plantar Fascia exhibits micro-tearing that leads to irritation, inflammation and pain at the junction of the Plantar Fascia and calcaneus or heel bone. The continued pulling of the Fascia joined to the heel bone can result in a bony growth on the heel commonly known as a Heel Spur. This growth triggers pain in the surrounding tissues that get inflamed.

During the rest periods when you sleep or sit for a long time the Plantar Fascia contracts and becomes tight. Initial movement or sudden getting up results in rapid application of body weight to the foot whereby the Fascia must quickly lengthen. This causes micro-tearing in the ligaments and stabbing pain for the first few minutes as you take steps.

How over-stretching of the Plantar Fascia normally occurs:

• Suffering from over-pronation (flattening of the arch)

• Long duration standing or walking on hard surfaces

• Overweight, obesity, or pregnancy

• Achilles tendons and tight calf muscles

Treatment for Heel Pain

A majority of patients can find relief through a conservative or non-surgical treatment of Plantar Fasciitis. Common remedies in this case are:

•
Ice Packs
- This should be applied to the inflamed area

Night Splint
- The mild stretching caused by night splints help in tensioning the calf muscles and Plantar Fascia

Shock wave therapy
- Shock wave pulses applied through a special machine helps in relieving the soreness

As Plantar Fascia excessively stretches due to over-pronation (fallen arches) and tightening of the calf muscle and ligaments it is advisable to undergo long term treatment that has recently been found to be quite effective.

The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) conducted a two year national study on treatments of heel pain. This study clearly demonstrated that the best course of cost-effective treatment is a strict regime of using "off the shelf"
orthotics
(arch supports) and a specific stretching program. The treatment resulted in 90 percent of patients experiencing substantial relief from
heel pain
symptoms.

These orthotic insoles help in correcting abnormal foot mechanics and over-pronation through providing support to the Plantar Fascia and releasing the undue strain. Thus it treats the root cause of Plantar Fasciitis. Orthotics are further helpful if combined with a daily regime of stretching and strengthening of the Plantar Fascia, the Achilles tendons, and the calf muscles. Such exercises need not take no more than 5 to 10 minutes per day.

Surgery

Surgery is the very last resort for the treatment of heel pain and should only be considered when all other conservative treatment has failed. In the surgical intervention the Plantar Fascia is partially released from the bone and any spur removed if found to be present. The pressure on the small nerves that traverse under the Plantar Fascia is released after proper identification of the cause.
