one that will aid him in being able to transfer from the wheelchair to the raised seat .here is the problem.The few medical supply stores he has called said they do not make them anymore.i say this is crazy,the one that he trying to get looks like a potty chair,that fits over a regular toilet and has a grip bar on the left side,and on the right has no bar so that way he can move from wheelchair to commode.an it needs to be padded and soft ,due to the fact he suffers from sensitive bottom sometimes .this is a real post so please do not make fun ,thanks all the info we can get will be welcomed

Electric Wheelchair or Powerchair - Which Should you Choose?

Electric wheelchairs are either rear or front wheel driven. Some of them are center driven or four wheel driven. These powerchairs come in many varieties like small portable models, foldable models, and models that can be dis-assembled. Large, full-featured electric wheelchairs that are called rehab chairs are also available. Powerchairs are designed for persons who have arm and leg disablement. Electric wheelchairs are fitted with electric motors that are powered by 4 to 5 ampere rechargeable batteries. These motors are outboard boat engine types. The batteries come in dry or wet types. Dry type batteries are the most preferred ones due to ease of operation and maintenance. Electric wheelchairs are also fitted with battery chargers so that plugging into standard wall outlets is easy.

Operating either a joystick or a controller usually controls electric wheelchairs. Hand controllers, chin controllers, puff/sack controllers are specifically designed for persons with varying degrees of operational difficulty. Electric wheelchairs come with several optional functions like tilting, reclining seat and leg elevators, etc. to facilitate healthy and functional operations.

My little brother is going to be wheelchair bound this halloween... he really wants to be a race car driver but i'm not sure what i could do for that...how should i make a race car cover for his wheelchair out of cardboard with a small trunk we could put the candy in because i thought that would be cool to be able to 'fill up the gas tank' with candy....he has glowing wheels on the chair which i thought would make great underglow or something but my real problem is trying to make the car in the shape of a car...not a box (which would look pretty bad..) so can you please send me links???

Feeling the baby while pregnant?

Okay I am almost 19 weeks pregnant and I haven't really felt the baby move yet. I am a little on the bigger side but not huge. There hasn't been any "kicks", "tapping", or "flutters". The only thing I can really feel is some pressure on the sides (alternating) every once and a while, I know it isn't round ligament pain. So my question is, when should I be able to feel the baby and if the pressure is the baby or not?

The pressure could be the baby. I have felt that too when I wake up in the morning. I am sleeping on my left side and I swear I can tell the baby is there. Once I stand up the pressure goes away. Maybe its baby.

Everyone is different when it comes to feeling movement. Some women don't feel anything until 20 weeks or longer. If you are concerned though it might be good to let your doctor know.

If you are in the market for a new foam wheelchair cushion but find all the options daunting there are really on a couple things you need to consider. I am going to take a look at some basic features of foam wheelchair cushions then take a look at one I found to be very useful in most situations.

Things You Need To Know Before You Purchase A Foam Wheelchair Cushion

The first thing you need to do is sit down and take the measurements of your wheelchair. There is not a standard size that all foam wheelchair cushions come in, but rather a vast variety of different sizes that range from 15 inches by 15 inches to 20 inches by 20 inches. Make sure you know the size of your wheel chair so that you can find a foam wheelchair cushion that will fit.

The next thing you want to determine is whether you need a high profile, low profile or contour cushion. High profile are usually around four inches thick and meant to provide maximum healing and protection against ischemic ulcers. These cushions are more appropriate for higher risk patients.

Low profile foam wheelchair cushions are around two inches in thickness and are ideal for the more active individual. Foam wheelchair cushions that are contoured provide more support then the low profile, but not as much as the high profile. Repairing And Improving Your Bike

If your bike is no longer working quite as well as it once did, or if it never worked as well as you wanted it to, that doesn't always necessarily mean you should get rid of your bike entirely. It might be that by buying new bike parts you can repair or improve your bike for cheaper than it would cost to buy a replacement. At the same time, by buying the parts you want in particular, you will be able to personalise and modify your bike to be the perfect bike for you.
 
But what parts can you buy and how can you improve your bike without replacing it? The options are pretty much endless.
 
Firstly the basics, and a great new bike part you can buy is a new seat. This is a common point of contention for many people who don't get as much enjoyment out of riding their bikes as they perhaps should. By getting a comfier seat you can greatly improve the experience of bike riding and make it something that you actually look forward to and that doesn't hurt. A range of options are available that you can replace on your bike including gel seats and seats that adapt to the shape of your buttocks.
 
One of the things that breaks most regularly on a lot of bikes are the gears, and its often to experience gears slipping down while you're riding (and to then end up kicking the air and scratching your ankle on the spokes or the pedal). Fortunately they're also easy to repair, and you can do it yourself if you have the right bike parts. Why not choose some funky new ‘grip shift' gears, or have an extra few gears put on the top while you're at it? Once you replace your gears it can be a good idea to invest in a guard that will prevent them from becoming damaged in the future. This way you can ride through mud and pebbles without causing damage to your bike.
 
Similarly breaks also often fail, and even if they don't stop working completely you can find they become unresponsive over time which can be quite dangerous if you're going down a steep hill only to find they won't work. Again though these are even easier than gears to repair, so just get a screwdriver, some replacements and stick them on.
 
Smaller removable bike parts can also be added on with no difficulty that will improve the experience and the safety. For example a bell - which can enable you to alert people that you want to overtake or ring before entering a tunnel; or a light - which will let you see where you're going in the dark. By adding reflectors you can also ensure that other people see you which is perhaps more important from a safety perspective when your on the road. Optional additional things you can add to personalise your bike are stickers - to change the design, and lights to go on your spokes - which look great when you really get the wheel turning.

I'm really into riding my bike this year. I ride miles and miles everyday. I would like to ride even more, but my seat isn't the most comfortable thing. Sensory Loss in Older Adults: Vision; Behavioral Approaches for Caregivers

As we age, our sensory systems gradually lose their sharpness. Because our brain requires a minimal amount of input to remain alert and functioning, sensory loss for older adults puts them at risk for sensory deprivation. Severe sensory impairments, such as in vision or hearing, may result in behavior similar to dementia and psychosis, such as increased disorientation and confusion. Added restrictions, such as confinement to bed or a Geri-chair, increases this risk. With nothing to show the passage of time, or changes in the environment, the sensory deprived person may resort to repetitive problem behaviors (calling out, chanting, rhythmic pounding/rocking) as an attempt to reduce the sense of deprivation and to create internal stimulation/sensations.

This article is the first in a series of three articles that discuss the prominent sensory changes that accompany aging, and considers the necessary behavioral adjustments or accommodations that should be made by professional, paraprofessional, and family caregivers who interact with older adults. Though the medical conditions are not reviewed in depth, the purpose of this article is to introduce many of the behavioral health insights, principles, and approaches that should influence our caregiving roles. This article addresses age-related visual changes.

CHANGES IN VISION THAT ACCOMPANY AGING

A. The changes in vision that accompany aging include:

1. A loss of elasticity of the lens; this means the person is no longer able to focus or accommodate to changes in lighting conditions. (Starting in our 40's, glasses are needed to see fine print). It also means the older person cannot adjust to sudden changes in lighting, resulting in an uneasiness when leaving a bright room to enter a dark hallway, or finding seats in the dark in recreation rooms, or theater. Going in the reverse direction can be equally difficult: from a dark room to a bright area.
2. Decreased pupil size; the light reaching the retina is reduced, requiring more light to see. This results in the need for lighting 3x to 4x what younger people need to see clearly
3. A loss of transparency; with age, there is a yellowing of the lens in the eyes, making color discrimination more difficult, especially blue and green. Warmer colors, such as reds and yellows are perceived best, explaining why bright colors are preferred.
4. More susceptibility to glare, and longer time is needed to recover from the effects of glare;
5. Eye diseases and disorders, such as cataracts causing a clouding of the lens; glaucoma, resulting from increased pressure of fluids in the eye, damaging the optic nerve and impairing vision. Glaucoma, the number one cause of blindness in U.S., in advanced stages results in yellow halos around images. Macular degeneration may occur, where vision is distorted, and images appear different sizes or different shapes, and are missing a central element. Visual disorders may be secondary to stroke, in which the eye can see the image but the brain cannot interpret the images. Diabetes may result in disrupted blood flow to the retina, causing diabetic retinopathy and a loss of vision, and blindness, in extreme cases.

B. What are the effects of visual loss on the older adult?

1. An increased dependency on others;
2. A sharply reduced quality of life (changes in activities in daily living and instrumental activities of daily living, reduced connection with outside world);
3. And, a fearfulness and reduced tendency to venture outside.

C. What are the effects of vision changes on demented elderly?

1. With the losses in visual acuity, other problems in cognitive functioning are heightened, such as difficulty processing unfamiliar faces and settings;
2. Because the person with dementia already has difficulty learning new behaviors, he or she is less able to learn new habits to compensate for the visual losses (e.g., learning to use visual aids to identify articles of clothing or other possessions;
3. There is likely to be an increased disorientation and confusion, as the search for structure and external cues is strained.

PRINCIPLES FOR CAREGIVERS

The following principles apply to caregiving approaches with older adults who have diminished sensory function. Increased sensitivity and insight to the needs of these individuals improves their quality of life and improves our effectiveness:

1. Observe the behavior of the person, and look for cues and signs of pain or discomfort;
2. Help the person work through the emotional impact of the sensory changes, allowing expression, acceptance, and support of the grief and sadness accompanying these losses;
3. Do not try to fix the unpleasantness; acceptance and support goes a longer way toward healing than a quick fix or a patronizing attitude;
4. Reduce excess disability by maximizing whatever functioning is still left, such as proper eyeglass prescriptions, or functioning hearing aids;
5. Consider assistive devices (phone amplifiers, large text books, headphones, and the Braille Institute for a variety of useful visual aids).

Approaches for impairments in vision:

1. Address the person before you touch him or her, identify yourself, let him or her know when you are leaving, speak normally, and do not shout;
2. Describe his or her surroundings to help orient and familiarize the person to the environment, tell him or her location of belongings, and if things have been moved;
3. Use as much contrast as possible, e.g., red objects on white background is better than black on a gray background, or blue on green background, (consider switch plates on walls, toothbrushes, combs);
4. Avoid moving quickly from a bright room to a darkened room, or v.v. Make sure the visually-impaired person takes the time for the pupils to adapt to the changes in lighting;
5. Introduce yourself every time you come into contact with the person, and explain what you are going to do because there are no visual cues;
6. Help to identify others in their environment with colored clothing, name tags with large print, etc.
7. Clean eyeglasses regularly, provide adequate lighting, and avoid glare;
8. Provide night lights, and arrange furnishings in the environment for safety and ease of mobility.

Even with normal aging, functioning of our five senses is not like it was when we were younger adults. This article offers caregivers who work with visually-impaired older adults some insights into the special needs and adjustments that will turn unpleasant, frustrating situations into more caring, helpful, and sensitive interactions. By integrating these behavioral approaches in the delivery of the health care with older adults, we can favorably impact the management of these conditions.

Has anyone ever used a hoyer lift for a person....?

that may not be able to hold on as they are being lifted? Isn't this for a person that is unable to get up by themselves? My Dad got sick and had to be put on a vent. When he was taken off it he was not able to talk or eat. He has a feeding tube now and he just lays in bed. He tries to respond by moaning or yelling. I have him home with me and I want to get a hoyer lift and a geri chair to get him out of bed. Any ideas or suggestions. This is his Doctor saying not to use this and leave him in bed. He was termed as activly dying several weeks ago, but has came back. He has been discharged from Hospice care and is back with his regular Doctor. The Doctor comes to see him twice a month and the R.N. sees him once a week to see if we need anything. I told them this is what I needed and they said it was too riskey for my Dad with not being more alert. I have been in the Medical field for 15 plus years and I know if he was in a nursing home they would have him up!

there are any number of medical supply houses that will sell you these items. without the cooperation of the doctor tho, medicare, or medicaid will not pay for them, you will have to purchase them yourself. Some supply houses will rent them to you as well.

Outdoor Chair Cushions – Outdoor Chair Cushions You Can Buy Online

A new set of outdoor chair cushions can make your patio, backyard, swimming area, or deck look almost brand new.  Nothing says dingy and dirty like old outdoor chair cushions that have stains on them, are torn, or just are not comfortable.  The great news is that you can find great deals online to replace your outdoor cushions.

One place that I like to shop online is Target.  Target has a great selection of outdoor  chair cushions (at least 90 the last time I checked), and you can find certain items online that are not available in stores.  Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Patio Cushion Collection - Tropical

This is a collection of tropical cushions.  Each of these items will run you anywhere from $29.99 to $39.99.

The first is your basic pair of seat cushions.  These cushions are 4” thick, can be washed with soap and water, and are fade resistant to help keep their new look.  They are attached to the chair with seat ties.  This pair costs $29.99

Then you can get a set of wicker seat cushions that are 4” thick.  One inch might not sound like a lot of difference, but you can real feel the extra comfort that a 4” cushion provides in just a matter of minutes.  The wicker set costs about $39.99.

Finally you can buy the chaise cushion which is a single cushion for both the seat and the back.  It is one of the thinnest at 2.75” so beware, but it also 74.5” long and 24.5” wide.  Expect to pay $39.99 for these outdoor chair cushions.

Reversible Wicker Chair Cushions – Blue & Green Floral / Stripe

If you want cushions with higher quality,this might be what you are looking for.  These are reversible cushions that require washing just half as much as single-side cushions.  They are much thicker at 5” and are 17” x 19” in size.  The review says that they will hold their color up to 600 hours of direct sunlight, so they may be more suited for a covered patio area than outside in the direct sun.  You can get a set of 2 of these for $59.99.

Sleeper Cushion – Sunbrella Fabric (23”x75”)

If you spend a considerable amount of time using your outdoor furniture, you need to move up in quality to ensure your comfort.  That is what these outdoor chair cushions were designed for – extreme comfort.  These are 5” thick.  The seat cushion is 48” long and the back is 27”, and they are 23” wide.  They can be cleaned with soap and water and attached to the furniture using seat ties.  Be prepared to pay $130 - $150 for this set.

All of the products above can be purchased online at Target and come with free shipping.  You will find many products online that are not available in stores, but don’t despair if you are not happy with the product.  The outdoor chair cushions can be returned to any Target location.

High Heels - You Know You Shouldn't Wear Them

Women know high heels are not good for their feet, and they don't deny that they're uncomfortable. But women will continue to wear high heels and you can mark it up to the price of beauty.

The truth is, feet are not made to wear heels. And you may be underestimating the damage that high heels can cause, beyond just having sore feet.

Not surprisingly, doctors of podiatric medicine (foot doctors) see no value in high heels, which they generally define as pumps with heels of more than two inches.

High heels are "biomechanically and orthopedically unsound," according to the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Common ailments from wearing high heels include calluses and heel pain, bunions, hammertoes, nerve problems that cause shooting pain into the toes, ingrown toenails and even stress fractures.

Women also complain about such conditions as bunions, hammertoes, nerve problems that cause shooting pain into the toes; ingrown toenails; and even stress fractures.

Nail problems also are common from the constant pressure of toes being pressed against the end of the shoe. That can cause the nail to thicken and promote the growth of foul-smelling fungus. Plus, if a person has curved toenails, it can induce or exacerbate painful in-grown nails.

If you simply must wear high heels, then limit the time you wear them. Alternate between high heel and low heel shoes to prevent the Achilles tendon from tightening. Wearing flatter shoes or tennis shoes for walking long distances, such as to and from the office and then changing into your heels once you get to work. Use heels with a quality insole designed to provide cushioning and arch support to maintain proper alignment and balance.

Shop for shoes at the end of the day to accommodate the foot's normal swelling.

Give your feet a nice massage or soak them in lukewarm water at the end of the day.

Do Spenco gel insoles really work well?

I need them for when I get a job again because I've had really BAD pain in my left shoulder blade and I heard that they help with back pain when you stand for a long time so i was wondering if they're worth it to get. I'm 17 if that helps?

The inserts will help you with standing all day but that plus the use of good shoes should manage the problem of standing. The shoulder pain is doubtful to be helped by the insoles. That is usually a shoulder or neck problem. Check with your family doctor initially and see what they have to say.
