Diabetes Care: Blood Sugar, Diabetes and You

The battle against diabetes in the United States is an ongoing battle. Type 2 diabetes over 40 is more prevalent due to the rise in obesity and the sad shape of the typical American diet. This is because we eat more refined foods, have more fast food on a regular basis and get less exercise than ever before. Because of this, there is more need for diabetes care blood sugar education.

Foods that enter the body are converted into glucose, a sugar that furnishes energy for your cells. A hormone known as insulin is necessary to complete the process of making that energy available to your body. In type 2 diabetes, the cells become resistant to insulin and glucose builds up in the blood stream. This is what diabetics see when they measure their blood sugars with a glucose meter.

Insulin producing cells reside in the pancreas and a continuation of insulin resistance by the cells of the body cause the insulin producing cells to fail to produce enough insulin to control glucose levels. This condition is known as type 2 diabetes. A lot of factors contribute to the making of this condition. Here we will talk about diabetes care blood sugar control and how it can help you to manage diabetes.

Often fatty foods and foods high in saturated fat contribute to aggravating the diabetic condition. That's why diabetes care nutrition is so important. Complex carbs like those found in fruits and vegetables, digest slower and release glucose more gradually as they digest. My 4yr old female cat is passing blood in her urine.Vet said it is not her kidneys, ultra sound was clear.?

There is a condition that affects cats and humans, alike. It is called Interstitial Cystitis. No one knows what actually causes it. It affects mostly women. Why are some places so much cheaper for test strips?

I am prediabetic, so insurance does not cover my test strips. I'm supposed to test regularly. I have both a Walgreens meter and a new Ascension Contour given out at the prediabetes class. As you know, test strips are expensive - Walgreens price for their brand was $52.99/100 and for the Ascensia $99.99/100. I looked at various places and did find a lot of Ascensia strips for about $89. Then I found the place below and they are charging only $57.30 for a box of 100 strips with free shipping for orders over $100. The second charges $44/(2 boxes 50), again with free shipping. What's up here? Why so much higher elsewhere and this place is dirt cheap? Are they not legit? Both claim on their website that the tests are not expired.

I would give it a try....buy 1 box, see if what they say is true without a big investment....the reason I believe they can be cheaper is that in the drugstores/Walmart, people come with their insurance card ( insulin dependent diabetics) and get their strips, so they can charge the higher prices because when insurance pays, people are not likely to shop around for better prices.

My friend had a blood pregnancy test done 7 to 8 days after possible conception and the result came back negative. She is still having pregnancy symptoms. Gestational Diabeties?

I am 7 months prego and found out yesterday that my Glucose test came back at 150 when, as they say, it should not be any higher than 120 at MAX. They want me going in for the 3 hour exam tomorrow morning. If the the results come back around the same my dr wants to start me on insulin. hmm. i've heard some ppl say that my dr is wacked out. Ex-utero cord blood collection refers to the collection of the umbilical cord blood after both the baby and the placenta has been delivered. There are no health risks associated with cord blood collection, either to the mother or the newborn.

Common methods of cord blood collection include inserting a syringe into the umbilical cord and drawing out the cord blood, or allowing the blood to drain into a sterile bag after the cord has been elevated. This procedure can be performed with either a vaginal delivery or Caesarean Section. However, it must be done immediately after the birth and processed within 24 - 48 hours.

This processing includes routine testing, including testing for HIV and Hepatitis B and C. The cord blood is then stored frozen, ready for use. While studies for expiration dates are still ongoing, the New York Blood Center's National Cord Blood Program (NCBP) has used cord blood in transplants that has been stored up to 10 years with the same results as cord blood used in transplants right after processing. Thus, while we have passed the 10 year milestone, it may be some time before we know exactly how long frozen umbilical cord blood is viable for transplanting.

According to the NCBP, more than 70 different diseases have been treated with cord blood so far. These include different types of leukemia, Fanconi's anemia, Hodgkin's disease, sickle cell disease, lymphomas, and many others. Because cord blood is collected in advance, tested, and ready for use, it offers several advantages over a bone marrow transplant, in addition to the fact that cord blood recipients don't have to be a perfect match the way bone marrow recipients do.

There are both public and private cord blood banks. Public cord blood banks store cord blood for the benefit of the general public while private cord blood banks store umbilical cord blood for the benefit of the donor or his or her family. With a public cord blood bank, once all the testing is completed, all traces of the donor are eliminated, so there is no chance for anyone to request or receive a particular donor's cord blood.

Public cord blood banks are not-for-profit and donors pay no storage fees while private cord blood banks charge storage fees, as well as processing and collection fees. However, it is worth it to those who choose to go this route as they are assured of a perfect match should their baby need a transplant later on. It is certainly a viable option for those who have a baby with a transplantable condition or who may be at a high risk for such a condition.

How many days after blood test were you diagnosed diabetic?

Blood work was done last Wed. -- they should have called by now?

It depends. For me I was diagnosed right there in the hospital the same day. it took several hours for the blood work to process, but they confirmed it after I was admitted. Originally I went to see my Dr. earlier that day and they tried to test my sugar using a standard meter kit, but because it was so high it wouldn't register. Thats when they told me to pack my bags and check into the hospital because he was sure that I would be diagnosed as a diabetic..which a few hours later I was.

If you just had general blood work done by a lab, the results take at lest a few working days, unless he requests rushed results. Your Dr. will receive the results and should be contacting you directly to go over them, which should include is diagnosis.
