Diabetes In Children

In layman’s term, diabetes is the inability of the body to regulate the blood sugar level on its own. This is usually caused by the lack of sufficient insulin, the hormone that breaks down and converts glucose in the blood stream. There are basically two types of diabetes – diabetes mellitus (type II diabetes) and diabetes insipidus (type I diabetes).

If Type II Diabetes is common among adults, it is Type I diabetes that haunt the lives of children.  Children with diabetes usually exhibit a number of symptoms such as thirst, weight loss, frequent need to urinate, headaches, abdominal pain, and behavioral problems, among others.

Most children who suffer from diabetes need to undergo insulin treatment for the rest of their lives. The said hormone is usually introduced into their bodies via regular insulin injections. Fast-acting insulin is usually given to them during the day while slow-acting ones may be administered at night before they go to sleep. As these children grow older, they would regularly need to have insulin injections even at night.

If you are a parent of a child with diabetes, one of the things that you need to do on a regular basis is test your child’s blood sugar level with the use of glucose meters such as the Ascensia Contour Monitoring System. This glucometer is preferred by a number of parents because the ease by which they can be used with children and even with babies. Glucometers like the Ascensia Contour Monitoring System come with test strips, a meter, a lancing device, and a number of lancets which you can use to draw out blood.

Some of the key features of the Ascensia Contour Meter includes the ability to make a reading with as little as 0.6 microliters of blood, automatic calibration for each test strip cartridge, easy-to-read screen, quick generation of results, 480 memory where you can store glucose readings, and 14-day glucose average report. This device also comes with a five-year warranty.

The Ascensia Contour Meter is considered to be the smallest glucometer out in the market today. It takes after its predecessor, the Ascensia Elite but with the added quickness as well as lesser need for a large blood sample.

Gestational Diabetes and problems with diabetic meters, can anyone help?

I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes and because of my art, I can't bear to test out of my fingers anymore. My doctor just switched from a Prestige IQ meter to an Accu-Chek Aviva meter and he requested that I use both for a week to ensure testing results were similar. I am finding that I have sometimes up to a 30 point difference between both meters, even from the same blood from the same finger. Can anyone tell me why?

My prestige IQ is set up on the Plasma setting and I used the Aviva default. Even when I change settings on the Prestige IQ to blood instead of plasma like I was told to use, the results are still 30 or more points off.

Can anyone help me figure out what's going on with my glucose meters?

Thanks in advance.

I have GD and use the Accu-Chek Advantage meter. My endocronologist didnt recommend testing from my arm since it's common for inaccurate readings :(

Have you tried pricking the side of your finger? Rather than just the tip? It can be less painful in the long run, I only test on my left hand and I have to test 6x daily?! Rub a lil' vasaline to your fingertips before you go to bed, helps them from getting dry and cracked.

You could have a bad meter too? Next time your at an appointment, have them check your blood level with their meter along with yours?

Good luck!
