My mom has COPD is 72 yrs old, weights 65 lbs, is a stomach feeding tube safe?
My mom has COPD for over 15 years now. In December she spent 3 weeks in ICU and now is in a nursing home. I live in the UK and she and my dad live in the USA. My mom had been using oxygen at home and nebulizers plus meds and still smoked. Well now she is down to 65 lbs and my dad is waiting on her doctor to approved the operation for a stomach feeding tube. My mom doesn't know who I am nor my Dad which spends all day every day with her. I know she will be dying but will the operation help or hinder her life that is left? My dad is in denile that my mom is dying and keeps saying when she walks and comes home... He had another heart attack right before Thanksgiving and he isn't taking care of his health either. I guess I just want to know about the feeding tube. Thanks for reading this.
Having a tube feeding will prolong your mothers life. It may not help her dementia,( forgetfullness, or memory) This maybe hypoxia ( lack of oxygen to the brain) I can tell you that having a tube feeding is not fun,and at times can be uncomfortable. I am not sure that your father will be able to maintain all the needs. If he has deficits himself, he may not be able to do this, it may require admission to a long term care facility for the remainer of her life. Your father is in denial, this is not unusual.
People who have chronic lung disease work so hard to breath, that the majority of their calories are spent attempting to breath ( because they are short of breath) Most with chronic lung disease are quite small. It is very difficult to eat when you are short of breath, feeling full takes up space in the abdomen which make breathing harder.

Especially resources in your parents hometown. These social workers should be able to assist you and your father to care for your mother in her end of life needs.
