Upon loss of power, a pilot/flight crew would pitch for the "best glide" speed. In most transport category aircraft, this speed results in a descent rate of between 1500 and 2,000 feet per minute, but might be as little as even 1000 feet per minute, depending on the atmospheric conditions and weight of the plane.
In general, you're looking at a "glide time" of around 10-20 minutes, during which an aircraft could glide to an about 75-150 miles away, depending on the winds, and (hopefully) make a safe landing. Of course, in an optimal situation, you won't need to travel a long distance to find a suitable landing field- instead you will travel a short distance and then circle your way down to the runway.
